Surrounded by Grey

Well winter is dragging on and I'm sitting at home with what I hope is the last cold/flu of the season.

I'm linking up to Let's Bee Social with Lorna Sew Fresh Quilts. and to W.I.P. Wednesday at Freshly Pieced  with this winter like project I'd like some feed back on.

I've been exploring improvisational quilting and I put together this quilt.  The blocks finish at 6" so the quilt is 12 inches by 18 inches.  I'm not entirely happy with it.  I find it very busy and I'm thinking I might need to frame it with solid fabric.  I flipped it on to it's side.

When I did that I really liked the way the four blocks on the left worked together so now I'm thinking of  keeping those blocks together but moving the two blocks on the right  over with solid fabric in between.  I'm also thinking of adding uneven borders of the same solid to offset  the improv blocks.  It's on the wall now with these greys but I'm wondering if I should add some more colour.

     What do you think?

It's lovely the way it is, but if you want to change it, why not try a narrow (or uneven) red or yellow sashing? That would frame the blocks and give it a little more zing, plus make it a little larger. An uneven border could work too. Just keep playing and it will come to you!

I agree with Mari. A narrow sashing between the blocks might settle it down a bit and define the blocks. I like the improv work you are doing.

I really like it - seems to remind me of flowers like roses for some reason!

I like the above idea of a narrow sashing, with a solid. I think your'e right on track that a solid will help it settle down a bit.

It's looking great! I enjoy improv ... it's a wee challenge, but such a lot of fun! There's heaps of possibilities here, maybe a soft grey wide border? maybe the extra colour could be in the binding? Look forward to seeing what you decide on! Linda

I think i would create an irregular setting, and then add an asymmetrical border. Whatever, just have fun!

This is very pretty! I think a sashing would make each block pop!

Thanks for visiting my blog!
I'm not sure how you should finish this quilt, but I do really like the muted grey blocks with the little pop of color inside, so I don't think I would add more color to the whole.
Hope this helps ;)
