Donation Quilts and One Monthly Goal

This weekend I set myself the goal of finishing my Broken Frames quilt top.  The pattern is by Cheryl Brickey of Meadowmist Designs.  It's been raining a lot today (this is a good thing, we need the rain) but I managed to get outside for a photo shoot between the showers.

I like how it turned out.  The graphic nature of the prints plays well with the frames and the Kona ash background is a good compliment for the prints.

This quilt will be a donation quilt for my local guilds outreach program.  I made it a bit shorter than the lap size in Cheryl's pattern, to fit the needs of our program.  I'm adding Broken Frames to the quilting pile. I'm linking this up to Main Crush Monday at Cooking Up Quilts.

I've chosen a different  donation quilt for my OMG for June.  This disappearing nine patch has been sitting at my house for about a year now and it's time I g quilted it and handed it in.

My intention is to free motion quilt the top  on my domestic sewing machine with an all over boxes design. I'll be using Machine Quilting with Style by Christa Watson to help me with this.  I won this book a couple of month ago at the OMG linkup at Red Letter Quilts.

This quilting design will be a challenge for me because I've never done an all over design on anything bigger than a mini and because I find straight line fmq to be a bit difficult. Things could get very wonky.

I'm linking up with Heidi of Red Letter Quilts for the OMG for June and with Julie of Pink Doxies for the Brave Quilter linkup.

We'll see how this all pans out.

Those will both be lovely donation quilts. I love how the ash and black frame those lovely prints. An all over boxy design will look great on your OMG. Can't wait to see your finished quilt.

Beautiful quilt top; the frames play so nicely with the featured fabric.

I too am doing a lot of quilting right now. I have three pieces ( a donation quilt, a (YIKES!) queen quilt, and a lap quilt. As far as straight line FMQing, I just finished a piece that I did that on. It took a while and a lot of stitch pulling, but I finally got a rhythm on it. It just works a lot better than the walking foot because with the walking foot, you have to move the entire quilt, and frankly, that's a pain. So persevere, my friend, it will be fine.

That broken frames quilt is so lovely Lisa! I love the colors you used in it. Straight line quilting is difficult for me as well; I'm much better stitching curvy designs. I think the all over boxy design will be a bit easier because the lines are so short. I know you can do it - good luck!

I love your version of Broken Frames, the color choices for the framing blocks works perfectly with the prints. Do you have an idea on how you want to quilt it?

I love Christa--she'll be a good guide for you as you take up your challenge. A straight line design like the boxes you have planned should be really doable. Good choice for your first foray into an allover pattern on a larger quilt. Sending you nothing but good wishes, Brave Quilter!

I just love your broken frames quilt top. I think Kona Ash is my new favorite background color - it just looks good with everything and makes the other fabrics just pop! Good luck with the free motion quilting. I really like Christa's approach to it, I'm sure you'll do great.

I think FMQ is a real challenge for a lot of us, and tackling a larger than a mini some new techniques at just managing the quilt bulk let alone the additional surface area. I'm looking forward to seeing your work, and so glad you linked up with #BraveQuilter. Remember, it's the process that counts, not perfection.

Good luck!
