Throw Back Thursday

It's Throw Back Thursday, and my first time linking up. I give away pretty much everything I make so the quilts haven't been around to take pictures of.  I persuaded my son to bring this quilt home when he came for a Christmas visit.   You can see that Benny is happy that I did.

This is the second bed sized quilt that I made.  The first one was made for my daughter when she went to university ( no pictures of it yet). Pretty much the minute after I finished making hers, my son started asking me when I was going to make him one.  He's the second child.  Can you tell?
Well here it is.  The picture looks like a throw back, but it was just a very grey day.

I think I made it about 6 years ago. He had painted his room a bright apple green and I chose fabrics to  go with that colour.  Don't you just love those water like batiks.  The fabric in the borders featured sea turtles, and I remember that I had to look everywhere to get enough fabric to finish the borders.  I mostly quilted it by stitching in the ditch.  I had these grandiose plans to sew free motion sea turtles throughout the border, but I gave up after three.  Here's one of my wonky turtles below.  I thought they were terrible at the time but it's actually not that bad.  I was a complete fmq beginner after all.

I picked up the pattern at Greenwood Quiltery, my local Quilt Shop, and I believe the pattern was designed by my good friend Wendy.  The quilt has held up pretty well.  Using good quality fabrics does pay off.
I'm linking up to Throw Back Thursday with Jenn at A Quarter Inch From the Edge.  I can't wait to see what everyone else has unearthed from their past.

Lisa, this is a great quilt, and your turtle is quite good. I had a good chuckle reading this because I just linked a similar Throwback Thursday featuring a batik quilt made about 6 years ago which was also my first attempt at FMQ. I did not have turtles on it, but tried flames...

Yes, I love the combination of blue and green batiks. And for a beginner at FMQ, excellant job!

Lovely colours. Batiks always go together so well; you were lucky to find so many different fabrics within the limited colour range. Your FMQ wasn't bad at all, I like your turtle.

You've made a great quilt. I wouldn't have dare to fmq sea turtles on such a gorgeous quilt before I had practice fmq on at least 5 dozens quilts lol. You did an awesome job. I love it. Thanks for sharing. ;^)

My favourite colour combo! Love this quilt Lisa, and to bad you gave up on the sea turtles as they look just fine! That's a good lesson for me today as I am beating myself up over the quilting on Dayna's quilt...step back. It is just fine. :-)

I do love those water batiks, and the colors of the quilt look so vibrant and wonderful after years of use which is fantastic. I love how pleased Benny looks with himself. :)

Those batiks are so vibrant, even after six years of love and washing. That's a testament to good fabric! And your wonky turtles are lovely. I'll have to show the sad little boat and crab I quilted into one of Himself's quilts. Thanks for linking up with Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge!

I do like your sea turtles. And having just three probably draws attention to them--sort of like a little signature, and I think that's neat. I'm glad to see that the batiks hold up so well. Hurray for your son for asking for a quilt.

I love the blue and green together, such a lovely combination. And your FMQ turtle is quite good, especially for a first try!

This is a great quilt - lovely colors and the quilting is great too. I free motioned a fish on a baby quilt I gave away. I was so proud of being able to make that fish! I couldn't get a good picture of it though - I deliberately did it on busy fabric since I knew it wouldn't turn out well.

Looks like a turtle to me - I think your quilting really works with this! I give away mine too and have none in my possession I haven't already blogged about!

Love the colors, and I like the turtle, too. It's so cute. I'm a huge pinwheel fan, so naturally the pattern works for me. I bet your son loves it, and will always treasure it. But i'm glad he's using it, too, because that's what they are for! You'll make him another one some day, anyway, I'll bet. Thanks for sharing your throwback. Would you make it again? There are a few i've made i don't think I would ever make now; but it's fun to think about how I would do them differently.

The colours are fantastic - nothing beats batiks for that sort of intensity - and I love the pattern, so much movement.
