Getting organized with Yellow

You know when I joined the Rainbow Scrap Challenge last month I envisioned a life where I would work through my piles of scraps and get multiple little scrap blocks made.  I should have known better.

I am one of those people who spread my self very thin with lots of projects going on at the same time.  I work in a creative chaos which gets really out of hand some times.  When I looked at my sewing room last week it looked like a messy hoarder lives in there. Come to think of it maybe a messy hoarder does live there.  I'm not going to tell you about how my creative chaos spills into other parts of the house.  As I was to the point of tripping over things I decided to tidy and organize before moving onto my yellow scraps.  It always takes so  long but worth the effort as I have a nice room to work in now.

     So after organizing this:

     I managed to make this:

And this:

Sorry the light was really bad when I took these two pictures.  The bottom points on the white maverick star are pretty tiny and get lost in the busy fabric, but I've decided it's part of the charm.  I was inspired to make the patchy maverick star by looking at other peoples posts.

I'm loving checking out everybody's posts and getting ideas for how to use up the scraps.  I'm  thinking the key to successful scrap busting is organization (not my strong point).  I've set myself some goals.  I'm going to try to make one medallion block, one large maverick star and one of those patchy blocks with the maverick stars that many of you are doing ......anything else will be bonus.  We'll see how I do.   You can share any wisdom you have regarding organization if you want.  But I can't promise I'll follow it.

Today I'm getting together to sew with two of my friends.  I'm working on a comfort quilt for my guild.  I'll be working on this disappearing nine patch quilt.  I'll include a picture because there is some yellow in this quilt and the yellow in this quilt came from my scraps.

I hope you all enjoy your quilting today.  I'm planning to.

Great blocks. Getting organized really helps me get way more quilting done. Enjoy National Quilting Day.

I use the small clear boxes from The Container Store (accessory boxes) to store the various colors of crumbs. I use clear med. size boxes (larger than shoe box size) to store pieces larger than a crumb but less than 1/2 yard (by color). I use separate bins for strings - (black and white in one, black and colors in one, blue/green/purple in one, warm colors in one, and because I's saving up for a particular project, one for red-white/cream-blue strings). Yardage over 1/2 yard is folded and stored on open shelves. Works for me for at least 3 years now. Good luck with yours!

Great yellows & fun blocks! Sometimes getting on top of the organization of fabric really helps the creativity. I've been using Bonnie Hunter's Scrap Saver system for several years and it's a great helper for getting scraps under control and helping get them used up!

Love your yellow blocks. Can't give you any tips as my sewing room need some TLC. Had a great national quilt day with great friends.

I'm sorry, I was laughing through your post because you sound JUST LIKE ME! I tend to work great in chaos and that is why I have a door on my sewing room so I can close it and no one can see it =). No advise on the organizing. I tend to love to dump out the two huge bins of scraps and sort through them at the beginning of the month looking for the one color I get to play with =)

Great Maverick stars, Lisa. Doesn't it feel good to be a little organized?

Good for you for having the self-control to organize your room BEFORE working on your RSC blocks. Your blocks turned out GREAT!! I am drawn to those "patchy maverick star" blocks, too. FOUR types of block is over my limit and Angela will (hopefully) have another RSC next year... I'll do those then. :o))

I have no choice but to keep a tight rein on my chaos as my two year old woud mix up and make everything disappear if I didn't! Still, it creeps in around the edges, and a good tidying once in a while is always helpful.

Your blocks are lovely!

Sounds like a great start to organizing and scrap using. It is an ongoing journey with no end.

Won't get to my yellow until we head back north...but it is the least abundant in my stash I do believe. Love your descriptions of suspecting a messy hoarder lives there...takes one to know one, and I SURE recognized that phrase! Yikes. And I keep buying... Love both of your stars. :-)
